Distinct chemical and stable isotope compositions of smectite formed during steaming of Clearwater Formation oil-sands from Cold Lake, Alberta

چکیده

Chemical reactions between oil-sands and injected steam or condensate during cyclic stimulation (CSS), commonly used to mobilize heavy oil bitumen, result in decomposition of pre-existing minerals formation new phases including clay minerals. These changes can reduce reservoir permeability limit hydrocarbon recovery. In this study, the chemical stable isotope compositions berthierine smectitic contained pre- post-steam Clearwater Formation from Cold Lake, Alberta were analyzed investigate how these affected by CSS. Berthierine abundance injection-zone decreased after steaming whereas increased. Pre- exhibited same range compositions, while those differed. Some injection-zone, particular, contain significantly more Fe Si but less Al than pre-steam samples. It is proposed that contributed CCS through partial inheritance 1:1 structure. This model approximates unique The also helps explain incomplete oxygen hydrogen exchange injection fluids formed

simulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water

abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...

Alberta oil sands development.

P olycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a ubiquitous class of hundreds of organic compounds composed of two or more aromatic rings that are released naturally and from human activities. Natural sources of PAHs include forest fires, oil seeps, and volcanic eruptions; anthropogenic sources include burning of fossil fuels and wood, production of coke and charcoal, petroleum refining, and petr...

Alberta Oil Sands Development and Odour Issues

Fort McKay is an Aboriginal community located in the midst of oil sand development in North East Alberta. Increasing emissions of key air contaminants from oil sands industry are monitored and regulated by provincial government. Though industrial odours have long been a cause of complaint in the region, to date odours have not been monitored or regulated by provincial governments, creating esca...

Land and water impacts of oil sands production in Alberta.

Expansion of oil sands development results not only in the release of greenhouse gas emissions, but also impacts land and water resources. Though less discussed internationally due to to their inherently local nature, land and water impacts can be severe. Research in key areas is needed to manage oil sands operations effectively; including improved monitoring of ground and surface water quality...
